spooling

The term spooling is used equally in data communication and in computer technology. In both cases, the aim is to compensate for the difference in speed in the transmission and processing of data.

Spooling is a matching process with intermediate storage, which is inserted as a buffer between two components and ensures that a higher transmission rate is matched to a lower processing rate.

Thus, when several print jobs are processed sequentially by a printer, they are buffered on the hard disk by the print manager of the operating system or the network operating system, prepared and printed one after the other. Spooling runs in the background so that work can continue in the foreground.
