spread spectrum (SS)

Spread Spectrum Technology(SST) is a transmission method for RF signals over wide frequency bands. The transmitter spreads its signals over a larger frequency range. Bandwidth spreading increases the occupied bandwidth and reduces susceptibility to interference. At the same time, the power spectral density is reduced compared to narrowband transmissions.

With the spread-spectrum technique( DSSS), narrowband modulation signals can occupy the same frequency band together with the spread-spectrum signals without affecting each other. The distribution pattern of the spread-band signal frequencies can be either spread-band technique or frequency hopping technique( FHSS).

With bandwidth spreading, transmission reliability increases and transmission becomes less sensitive to reflected radio signals and interference from topological conditions. At the same time, the Power Flux Density( PFD) in the satellite downlinks can be limited. Spread spectrum technology has its advantages in its insensitivity to interference and can also be used in environments with high levels of interference, such as industrial plants, hospitals, airports or production halls.

The spread-frequency technique is used in various WLANs according to 802.11 and in the GPS system, among others.
