The name Squeezebox stands for a network music player. As a player, the Squeezebox forms the interface between the Internet and a HiFi system. It is connected to the home server (slim server), which establishes the connection to the Internet and runs the control programs on the Squeezebox.

The connection between the home server and the Squeezebox can be wireless via a WLAN or wired via Ethernet. The music system is connected to the analog or lossless digitalaudio outputs. Headphones can be connected via cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth. Multiple Squeezeboxes in different rooms of a house can also be synchronized with each other.

The Squeezebox receives audio data from the Internet, stores it temporarily and sends it to the HiFi system. The buffering is used for streaming, so that the received music files are played back in high music quality without interruption. Squeezeboxes supported all popular audio compression and audio file formats such as MP3, Waveform Audio File(WAV), WindowsMedia Audio(WMA), the AIFF file format, Free Lossless Audio Codec( FLAC) and Ogg Vorbis. Music playback can come from Internet radio, podcasts or from the music library with the collected MP3 files.

Squeezeboxes are controlled via remote controls with menucontrols. These are often equipped with mini-displays on which the various Internet sources and music libraries are called up via menu control. User-friendly control functions make it easier to navigate through the music libraries and support the selection of favorites or the search for titles and artists.
