structure of management information (SMI)

Structure of Management Information(SMI) are rules used to define objects that can be accessed by means of a network management protocol.

The SMI information is part of the Simple Network Management Protocol( SNMP), which describes the rules for defining the managed objects in the Management Information Base( MIB) of SNMP. The objects are stored in a tree structure, the Management Information Tree( MIT) and described in the abstract description languageASN.1. As a component of network management, SMI information can be used to represent managed objects. InOSI networks, objects can be managed using Management Information Base (MIB).

RFC 1155 describes the rules for defining the managed objects in the Management Information Base (MIB).
