suffix
A suffix is a suffix that is added to a base word. InIT, the suffix is used for extensions of file formats, to indicate a reference, or for appended addresses.
For file extensions, the suffix is a multi-letter combination, for example *.bmp for a bitmap file format or *.doc for a document format. As a reference, the suffix indicates levels or measurement methods, as in A-weighting, dB(A), a sound measurement according to a certain hearing characteristic, and for IP addresses, a suffix forms the last part of the address. Especially for IP addresses that are structured according to Classless Interdomain Routing( CIDR), the suffix plays a decisive role for the number of network and host addresses.
