synchronization (SYN)

  1. Synchronous refers to the simultaneity of two or more events. Time or phase equality is established by synchronization. This can refer to physical events, such as a specific point in time in an oscillation or in a pulse, for example the rising edge, or also to a specific phase. It can also refer to communication partners performing a specific action at the same time, such as processing a protocol.
  2. The transmission control character (TC9) synchronization ( SYN) is used, among other things, in synchronous transmission. It is a character from the ASCII character set and is used to establish and maintain character synchronism between the sending and receiving terminal, especially when no other character is being transmitted. The SYN control character occupies position 16 (hex.) resp. 022 (dec.) in the ASCII code.
