In communication networks, a self-contained data unit consisting of user data and control data is called a datagram or data telegram.

Datagrams are called telegrams in fieldbuses. The fieldbus telegrams contain, just like the postal telegrams known from postal technology, the user data in addition to the sender and destination address. In most fieldbuses they also have a data field for cyclic block checking(CRC).
