third generation partnership project 2 (mobile communications) (3GPP2)
In contrast to 3GPP, the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 ( 3GPP2 ) is aimed at the North American and Asian mobile communications markets. Under the name 3GPP2, the specifications for 3rd generation( 3G) mobile communications networks are being developed. The agreement was reached in 1998 between Asian and North American telecommunications associations.
The associations mentioned include Association of Radio Industries and Business( ARIB) of Japan, China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) of China, Telecommunications Industry Association( TIA) of North America, Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) of South Korea and Telecommunications Technology Committee (TTC) of Japan.
3GPP2 aims to develop global radio networks based on IMT-2000 and CDMA2000. One of the 3GPP2 projects is Ultra Mobile Broadband( UMB). The development of global specifications for radio technologies is supported and standardized by the American National Standards Institute( ANSI), the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and the Electronics Industry Association( EIA).
