The special character tilde (~) is used in mathematical expressions and in some languages, such as Spanish. In mathematics, the tilde stands for "approximately". If there is a horizontal line under the tilde, then the character combination stands for "approximately equal". Tilde is also used in Internet addresses( URL) to distinguish homepages of different users.

Tilde occupies the decimal position 0126 and the hexadecimal 7E in the ASCII character set, the double tilde 0187.
