toner

Toner is a pulverized printing ink used in laser printers, fax machines and copiers and is contained in a cartridge. The individual toner particles have a size between 5 µm and 30 µm.

During the printing process, the pigments of the toner are repelled from the statically charged areas on the image drum and adhere only to the areas that are electrically neutral. These are the areas that have been exposed by the laser beam. After the toner powder has been applied, it is permanently bonded to the print medium by the fuser unit. To achieve this, the fuser unit heats the toner above its melting point, the toner liquefies and can penetrate the paper.

Toner pigments can be black, have a primary color, and are also available in other colors. The toner is located in special cartridges adapted to the type of printer.

Toners are divided into single-component toners and two-component toners. Single-component toners are contained in cartridges and are mixed with developer material. This developer ensures that the toner particles are prepared for the charging drum. Intwo-component toners, the toner and developer are separate. This technology is used on larger digital presses.

Excess toner is stripped off a thin mylar strip during the printing process and collected in the waste toner container, which may be located in the toner cartridge.
