traffic engineering (routing) (TE)

For today's data traffic, which is a multimedia mix ofreal-time data, streaming, voice data, e-mail, file transfer and HTML pages, appropriate mechanisms must be implemented to transfer this data mix between the communication partners with the highest possible quality. Traffic engineering( TE) is such an active traffic control combining routing and bandwidth management techniques.

Traffic engineering includes all measures to achieve an optimal connection between the communication partners. This includes traffic shaping for optimal path selection and the possibility of changing traffic characteristics, ensuring appropriate path lengths, providing transmission capacity by means of bandwidth management, traffic policing for checking the conformity of data traffic, guaranteed delay times and runtime variations for response time behavior, and short-term route and bandwidth changesin order to be able to maintain the guaranteed quality of service.

While in routing the algorithm determines the routing protocol, traffic engineering does not rely exclusively on the algorithm, but takes into account other techniques for traffic shaping, considering the aspects already mentioned and congestion control. Not the shortest route or the one with the fewest hops is taken, but the underloaded one, the one with the highest quality or the one that guarantees the required quality of service.
