A trap is a trap or catch point. Insoftware engineering, a trap is used to catch certain events during a program run.

Such events can be error conditions that are detected and captured by the trap.

In protocol technology, a trap is a message about an event that is sent out independently by an agent. For example, traps are used in Simple Network Management Protocol( SNMP) and are sent by SNMP agents to network management where they indicate an important event. The SNMP manager receiving the trap can ask for more information.
