ultra-DMA (UDMA)

Direct Memory Access(DMA) has a powerful transfer protocol in Ultra-DMA (UDMA) for data transfer to the hard disk. Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) can be seen as the successor protocol to Programmed Input Output( PIO).

UDMA has the advantage that the data transfer from the hard disk to the main memory is controlled directly by the DMA controller without the central processing unit( CPU) being involved in the data transfer. This direct transfer has an effect on the transfer speeds of the Integrated Drive Electronics( IDE). UDMA is available in two speed modes with 33 MB/s(UDMA-2) and with 66 MB/s (UDMA-4). In addition, the UDMA protocol has error correction.

Newer UDMA versions have transfer rates of 100 MB/s (UDMA/100) and 133 MB/s (UDMA/133).
