universal character set (UCS)

Universal Character Set(UCS) is a character set standardized according to ISO 10646, which has 32 bits, or 4 bytes, per character. The 4,294,967,296 possibilities of the UCS code offer sufficient space for the most varied languages, characters and pictorial characters.

Since the character set scope of the USC character set can no longer be represented in a code table, in the UCS character set the language and character assignment is divided into 128 groups, 256 levels, 256 columns with 256 cells. With this extensive address space, all characters in all languages can be mapped.

The UCS character set has evolved from the ASCII code and Unicode. There are different USC codes, such as the USC-2, where each character is encoded by 2 bytes, or the USC-4, whose characters consist of 4 bytes. UCS-2 can be used to represent all Unicode characters whose number is less than 65,536. The USC-4 code can represent a total of 128 x 256 x 256 characters. The first bit of the first byte remains unused, hence the 128.
