user generated content (UGC)

User-generated content (UGC) is intellectual content created by web users. This contrasts with the classic model, in which content is created by the web provider.

Especially with regard to Web 2.0, texts, videos, graphics, photos and other media content created by end consumers play a significant role. Some websites, such as those of social networks, work only with user-generated content. Examples are Youtube, Flickr, MySpace, StudiVZ, Xing, Facebook and many others. But not only in social networks but also in the classic Web 1.0 there are many examples of UGC concepts. For example, the various wikis with their encyclopedias, where anyone can post their texts. In addition to these websites, there are many others where authors offer themselves and publish their texts.

Depending on the concept and business model of the website operator, the UGC content can be posted freely or on a fee basis.
