video codec 1 (VC-1)

The VC-1video codec from Microsoft is based on WindowsMediaVideo(WMV9). It is a video codec with Discrete Cosine Transformation( DCT) as it is also used in H.261, H. 263, H. 264/ AVC, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Video codecs such as VC-1 are designed for and supported by consumer electronics such as set-top boxes( STB), HDTV, HD-DVDs, and Blu-Ray disc.

VC-1, which is also used in HDTV and features good compression ratios, can be used equally for HDTV displays in interlace at 1,920 x 1,080pixels, referred to as 1,080i, and for progressive scan displays at 1,280 x 720 pixels, referred to as 720p. VC-1 was adopted as an open standard by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers( SMPTE) in 2006.

In addition to the standard version, there are two other versions with different profiles, WMVA and WVC1.
