video coding experts group (ITU) (VCEG)

The Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) is a study group of the International Telecommunication Union(ITU-T). It is responsible for the standardization of video coding according to H.26x and picture coding standards according to T.8xx. The study group is concerned with multimedia services and related applications. This area includes multimedia terminals and systems, conferencing systems, gateways, gatekeepers, modems and other units, their protocols and signal coding.

The Video Coding Experts Group has been involved in video coding since the 1980s, and the H.120 standard was created in the 1980s. Later, in the 90's, the standards H.261, H.262 and H.263 and in 2003 with H. 264 and later H.265. An also well-known video codec specified by the Video Coding Experts Group is the efficient scalable video coding Scalable Video Coding( SVC).

A well-known project of the Video Coding Experts Group, which it developed together with the Moving Picture Experts Group( MPEG), is MPEG-2.
