voice over cable (CATV) (VoCable)

Voice over Cable (VoCable) is aimed at private households that are connected to a broadband cable network and would like to use it for telephony as well. The basic requirement for telephony is that the broadband networks have a return channel and support two-way communication.

In addition, Voice over Cable requires cable modems to enable signaling from the subscriber-side terminal or subnet to the channel structure of the TV cable network. VoCable telephony will use the IP protocol. EuroDOCSIS is based on quality of service( QoS) and VoIP. To protect the transmitted data, digital signatures based on the public key method will be used to authenticate each user and allow only those for whom the content is intended to receive data packets.

The transmission of voice over cable is supported in DOCSIS by the Resource Reservation Protocol( RSVP) and in the IP network by Differentiated Services( DiffServ). The Cable Modem Termination System( CMTS) handles the switching between the two protocols.
