volume boot record (VBR)
The Volume Boot Record(VBR) is the first boot sector on any non-partitionable storage, such as floppy disks. On partitioned disk, it is the Master Boot Record( MBR).
The VBR record can contain the code for loading and invoking the operating system or other standalone programs. During booting, the Basic Input/Output System( BIOS) accesses the Volume Boot Record and processes the program code.
The Volume Boot Record contains the Disk ParameterBlock. This is a data table that contains information about the storage capacity of the disc, the number of sectors, etc. In addition, the VBR record contains the Volume Boot Code, a special program code with which the operating system can be loaded.
