OpenDoc

OpenDoc was a multi-platform software. The software enabled the support of compound documents. It allowed small, reusable components to be used for specific applications on different operating systems and computer programs.

OpenDoc was an alternative to Microsoft's Object Linking and Embedding( OLE). OpenDoc was originally developed by Apple in 1992. Later, the technology was transferred to Component Integration Laboratories( CI Labs), a company sponsored by Apple, Adobe, IBM, Novell, Oracle, and Xerox, among others. The first version was included on Apple's latest Macintoshcomputer in November 1995. IBM developed versions for the Apple operating system( OS/2) and Microsoft Windows in the years that followed. In 1997, further development of OpenDoc was discontinued.
