extensible application markup language (XAML)

Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) is an XML description language for describing arbitrary .Net object trees, which evolved from Office Open XML.

This description language is used to describe user interfacehierarchies declaratively as XML code. Since the structures of XAML are built as XML files, programming languages such as JavaScript, F# or C# can read their contents. In addition, the content can be easily found by search engines. XAML is designed to handle the coordination and processing of transactions between multiple entities.

When a XAML description is compiled into a binary format, it is called Binary XAML, BAML.

XAML is used by the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), among others. The Adobe counterpart to Microsoft's XAML is MXML.
