fax over IP (FoIP)
Fax over IP (FoIP) is the real-time transmission offax data using the TCP/IP protocol. Fax over IP can be transmitted as a real-time service, as specified in T.38, but also according to T.37 using the store-and-forward method via Internet telephony( VoIP).
Fax over IP can be used if both communication participants support T.38. Since this is usually not the case and T.38 is only supported by a few providers, a VoIP adapter( ATA) or a VoIP gateway must be used for fax transmission over the Internet, depending on whether the wide- area network is an IP network or an analog long-distance network. Fax machines, fax boards or fax servers can be connected directly to the VoIP adapter or gateway.
