freedom of mobile access (mobile communications) (FOMA)

Freedom Of Mobile Access (FOMA) is a mobile communications service from a Japanese provider with a transmission rate of 384 kbit/s for the downlink and 64 kbit/s for the uplink. This service, which can be used for multimedia services, is based on the ITM standard and uses WDCMA for transmission. FOMA is not compatible with UMTS.

FOMA has been around since 2001; it was the first compliant service from IMT-2000.
