Human gait has individual movement patterns that lend themselves well to machine identification. To avoid having to compare complete video sequences with the reference gait sequences, only the silhouette of the persons and their gait cycle are compared. The step cycle does not play a role in the evaluation.

Gait recognition is one of the dynamic biometric methods used in public areas. Since many streets, squares, entrances and other neuralgic points are monitored by video surveillance in urban areas, gait recognition can be used to filter out those with certain gait characteristics from the many people recorded.
