handover number (mobile communications) (HON)

The Handover Number (HON) ensures that the identity of the mobile station is preserved when it moves from one mobile switching center to another.

The Visitor Location Register( VLR) of a GSM network creates a HON number at the request of the mobile switching center to which the mobile station is changing. This is used to establish the new connection between the two exchanges. The Handover Number is not used for dialing information.
