hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC)

If both coaxial cable and optical fiber are used in a cabling system, this is referred to as hybrid cabling or hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC).

Such hybrid structures are generally used in cable distribution networks according to IEEE 802.14 and are used for broadband transmission of data, voice and video.

The configuration is usually such that the lines from the headend to the end splitter are fiber optic cables, and the lines from there to the antenna socket are coaxial cables. The advantage of this cabling is that the fiber optic cable can be used to bring a high bandwidth to the end splitter, and thus in the immediate vicinity of the user, and that the existing coaxial cabling does not have to be replaced.
