Previewing involves viewing video documents before recording them. In some DTP programs, graphics programs, and painting programs, reduced preview windows show the graphics and animations as they will later appear on the screen after the more accurate, time-consuming calculation.

For video, the preview of a cut or keying shows how the video will look with the built-in effect. Such a preview should be done in real time and at full resolution, so that the effect is displayed as it will be in the finished video.
