Android 5.0 Lollipop

Google handed over the complete code ofAndroid 5 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on November 3, 2014 under the name Lollipop. The first end devices with Android 5 were the latest smartphones of the Nexus series from Google itself.

As in Android 4.4 Kitkat, the Android Runtime( ART) replaces the virtual execution environment Dalvik- VM (Virtual Machine), which translated Java programs Just-in-Time( JIT) into machine code. ART, on the other hand, uses Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compilation, which processes program code during installation. The precompiled applications lead to a faster program start and more system speed, but also assume a higher memory capacity.

Among the most important innovations of Android 5 Lollipop is the Material Design user interface with color effects, shading and animations when switching apps. Also new is an energy-saving mode with limited functions and disabled background data, recognizable by a colored notification bar, as well as the improved lock screen and a "Do not disturb" mode. Notifications appear as pop-ups outside the status bar in Android 5. The user can also create multiple user profiles with different backgrounds, ringtones, apps and settings, e.g. also for other people or for a separation of professional and private activities.
