Eye-Fi card
Eye-Fi is a special SD card with built-in WiFi that can be used to transfer photos wirelessly from a digital camera to other devices connected to a Wi-Fi network. To transfer photos to WLAN devices, it is no longer necessary to remove the SD card from the digital camera and read it out, or to connect the digital camera to the notebook or tablet PC with a USB cable. With Eye-Fi, the photos are transferred via WLANs and directly as soon as the Eye-Fi card has detected a WLAN.
The WiFi SD cards, SDHC, have storage capacities of up to 32 GB and speed classes of 6 and 10, which corresponds to a minimum of 6 MB/s and 10 MB/s, respectively. The integrated WLAN works according to 802.11b/g/n. The WLAN function allows the WiFi SD card to store up to 32 different WLANs. However, these have to be configured in the computer before use. The installation software is included on the card. During configuration, the folder in which the photos are to be stored is determined. If the digital camera is within range of a WLAN, the photos are uploaded automatically.
Any digital camera or camcorder with an SDHC slot can work with the Eye-Fi card. Toshiba has developed a competitor product to the Eye-Fi card with the FlashAir card.
