In private branch exch anges, several lines or telephone numbers are combined to form a hunt group or hunt group number. All incoming calls are thus routed directly via the PBX.

There are several ways of distributing an incoming call to a hunt group to the extensions. For example, the incoming call can be routed to a free extension or the incoming calls can be distributed evenly among the extensions. Since the extensions of hunt groups usually have their own sequence numbers, each individual extension can be dialed specifically by means of extension dialing.
