characters per line (cpl)

Intypography and word processing, characters per line (cpl) is used to calculate pagination. This specification applies to both the print display and the screen display.

The character per line specification tells you how many characters fit into a single line. The number is mainly dependent on the font size and the line length, but is also influenced by the font, since the different fonts have different character widths for the same font size. There are fonts with proportional spacing, the so-called proportionally-spaced fonts, in which all characters have different widths, and the uniform-spaced fonts, in which each character has the same width.
