fast token ring

Fast Token Ring was a standardization approach that was intended to transmit a data rate of 100 Mbit/s via the Token Ring.

The activities for a Fast Token Ring are to be seen in direct connection with the emerging dominance of Ethernet, which was already able to transmit 100 Mbit/s via Fast Ethernet at the end of the 1980s. For this reason, the standardization body for Fast Token Ring, IEEE 802.12, attempted to specify a high-speed variant.

In addition, IEEE 802.3 had already specified a variant for Token Ring with the 100 Mbit/s activities of 100Base- VG AnyLAN. The 100Base-VG concept, which transmits both frame formats, the Ethernet frame as well as the Token Ring frame, and therefore also has the additional designation AnyLAN, can be understood not only as Fast Ethernet, but also as Fast Token Ring.
