muting

Muting is a feature of telephones. It interrupts the microphone line to the other party. In motor vehicles, the radio is automatically switched off by muting. Such muting functions are also available for televisions and audio systems.

With muting, the volume is switched off without operating the volume control, so that the same, previously set volume is available when the system is switched on again.
