open archival information system (OAIS)

Open Archival InformationSystem (OAIS) is an open archive in which information is made available to selected user groups. The OAIS archiving system describes how information is made available for long-term archiving. The reference model of OAIS is described in ISO 14721.

The simple OAIS model clarifies the relationships between the creator, the administration and the user. The creator, which can be a person or a client, provides the information to be preserved. The management determines the OAIS policies that relate to updating the archive and management functions. And the user can be a person or a client system that uses the OAIS services and can retrieve desired information.

The ISO 14721 standard essentially describes the workflow and the internal and external functional interfaces of a digital deposit system, which is modular in structure and takes into account the different development speeds of the individual system components.

OAIS fulfills various responsibilities that differ from other archives. The designation "open" emphasizes that OAIS recommendations and standards are developed by open forums, but it does not mean that OAIS archives can be used by anyone.
