Behind the term smart is intelligence. Smart is generally used for intelligent devices, smart cards or for intelligent concepts, services, utilities, entertainment devices and for many other technologies and areas of application.
Since modern chip technology has found its way into all areas of daily life, smart concepts range from the smart home with its smart lighting, to smart building, to the smart city. Smart concepts control our energy supply and consumption with smart grids and smart energy; they are making their way into sporting activities with smart wearables, smart bracelets, smart shoes and smart watches, monitoring physical fitness and health values; and they support interpersonal communication with smartphones and expand the depth of information with smart glasses. The opposite of smart is dumb: Dumb devices without their own processing power are Dumb. Dumb terminals or dumbphones, among others, are well known.
