time gain compensation (sonography) (TGC)

Sonography is a measurement method with ultrasound used in medicine. In this procedure, which can be used to examine human tissue and organs, an ultrasound signal is irradiated into the human body using a sound generator. This signal is absorbed and reflected depending on the tissue consistency. Reflection images are created from the transit time of the reflected signal, which can be interpreted by medical specialists.

Since the ultrasound signal undergoes attenuation in human tissue, the irradiated signal is modified in the dynamic range when it is fed in by means of Variable Gain Amplifier( VGA) or the reflected signal is compensated for by means of Time Gain Compensation( TGC), which allows the large dynamic range of the transducer to be better exploited. On the one hand, Time Gain Compensation reduces interference signals and artifacts, and on the other hand, the reflection signal is adapted to the dynamic range of the downstream AD converter.
