versatile multilayer disc (VMD)

The Versatile Multilayer Disc (VMD) is another disc development that has a multilayer structure.

Developed by New Medium Enterprises Inc, the VMD disc can have up to ten layers, with each layer having a storage capacity of 5 GB. Accordingly, there are to be four-layer versions with 20 GB, but also eight-layer ones with 40 GB and ten-layer ones with 50 GB.

The storage capacity of the individual layers are in the range of the HD DVD and the Blu-Ray disc. In contrast to the optical storage with blue laser, the VMD disc works with red laser diode and can be played on inexpensive HD players.

The VMD disc will be used for feature films from India.
