8008
Intel's 8008 was the first 8-bit microprocessor to be launched in 1972, replacing the 4-bit versions 4004 and 4040. This central processing unit( CPU) was the first programmable CPU, but it was not yet suitable for higher programming languages. It was designed for use as a terminalcontroller.
Technologically, the PMOS technology with structure widths of 10 µm was also used for this chip equipped with 3,300 transistors. The 8008's performance of 100,000 instructions per second (0.1 MIPS) was only slightly higher than that of the 4004, and the clock rate was 800 kHz. The 8008 had an instruction set of 48 instructions, 6 registers, and could address 16 KB ofmemory with its 14-bit wide address bus.
The Intel processor 8008 is housed in a dual inline package with 18 pins.
The 808x series with the microprocessors8080, 8085, 8086, 8087 and 8088 can be mentioned as successor types.
