LAN NetView

LANNetView is IBM's smallest network management platform within SystemView. It complements the range of( host) NetView and NetView/6000 downwards and is designed for the control of LAN environments. It replaces the old products Token Ring Manager and LAN Network Manager respectively. Especially the small PC database was not suitable for larger environments. LAN NetView OS/2 Distributed Systems Management( DSM), as it is called in full, is a network management platform for OS/2 environments.

LAN NetView can be implemented in a distributed manner, with the individual parts highly correlated together. LAN NetView corresponds to the approach for a multi-vendor management platform already known from the Distributed Computing Environment( DCE) of the Open Software Foundation( OSF) and HP Open View. A DSM server includes the operating system, DSM system software, APIs, IBM management applications, third-party management applications and a graphical user interface. There can be multiple DSM servers on a network.

LAN NetView includes the CM API from Open Software Foundation (OSF) as a programming interface, as well as Distributed Management Environment( DME), Simple Network Management Protocol( SNMP), CMOT ( CMIP over TCP/ IP) and CMOL (CMIP Over Logical Link Control) as management communication interfaces. By supporting all of these interfaces, IBM hopes to get a handle on nearly every client, server, bridge, router, etc. found on a network.
