PCMCIA card
The PCMCIA(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card is a credit card-sized add-on card for portable personal computers(PCs) with a PCMCIA slot. The card is equipped with a 68- pin connector through which it is connected to the personal computer.
Three package sizes are specified for the PCMCIA cards, which was renamed the PC Card in 1995, with classification into types. All three types have a uniform size of 54 mm x 85.6 mm and differ in thickness. Type I is 3.3 mm thick, Type II 5 mm and Type III 10.5 mm. Two Type II cards fit into the Type III slot. There are also Extended Cards for Types I and II, which are 50 mm longer than the standard cards.
In addition, there is already a Type IV PCMCIA card from some manufacturers, with a thickness of 13 mm, but this has not yet been specified by the PCMCIA Association.
PCMCIA cards are now available for almost all applications, including as memory extensions (Type I), as modems, for memory cards, interface cards for PC host coupling, ISDN or networks (Type II), hard disks or removable disks (Type III) and for many other applications.
