link segment
Link segments are pure point-to-point connections of two repeaters or one remoterepeater, which are not available for connecting user stations.
Link segments are usually used to connect two LAN segments located at a distance from each other. For Ethernet, a distance of 1,000 m is specified.
Typically, optical fib ers are used to implement link segments( FOIRL), but they can also be implemented in coaxial cables. They consist of two optical fibers; one fiber is provided for each transmission direction. The maximum propagation time on an 802.3 link segment(1,000 m) must not exceed 2,570 ns.
