optical media converter (OMC)

Optical mediaconverters(OMC) are network components that transparently connect different optical fibers - monomode fibers and gradient fibers - or optical fibers with TP cables.

Media converters date back to the 1990s and are used in structured cabling, but also in access networks. Since media converters are protocol transparent, they can be used in a wide variety of networks. In local networks such as Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet as well as in wide area networks. They can transmit signalsduplex and work independently of the data rate.

They are used for adapting different transmission media, optical fibers, plastic fibers or for adapting the FO connectors. They can increase the expansion range of the network structure. The functions of media converters are sometimes integrated into switches.
