resource management cell (RM)

The RM cell for resource management contains information about the state of the ATM networks; among other things, about the available bandwidth, the state about overload and occurring traffic congestion.

The RM cell is a special ATM cell in which the Payload Type Identifier( PTI) data field is set to 6 and which uses some payload data fields. The RM cell is transmitted as the nth cell and controls the traffic flow on an existing virtual channel.
