TrueMotion

TrueMotion is the name for the video codecs from On2 Technologies. The company, founded in 1992, deals with video compression and has developed various video codecs. These codecs are used in Flash players, Skype and Viewpoint media players, among others. The TrueMotion codecs have the type designation VPx.

The video codecVP3 is a video codec for low bit rates. It was developed in 2001, published as open source software and can be used universally. Since 2002 it has formed the basis for Theora and is also used in other products, such as Ogg Vorbis. The combination of the container format of Ogg, the video compression of Theora and the audio compression of Vorbis provide a comprehensive royalty-free multimedia format.

VP6 was developed as a successor to the VP3 and VP5 video codecs. The VP6 codec is used in digital TV for flash video. In addition, the Chinese use this video codec in their Enhanced Versatile Disc( EVD), a competitor product to the Blu-Ray disc( BD). In addition, the VP6 codec is used in Flash Player V.8.

VP7 was developed as a successor to the VP3, VP5, and VP6 video codecs. It is a codec for Video for Windows( VFW) and DirectShow, which is characterized by improved compression compared to the previous versions and also compared to Video Codec 1( VC-1) and H.264/ AVC. For this, VP7 uses a simpler conversion entropy with simple character-based arithmetic. Skype has been using VP7 for video conferencing since 2005.

The VP8 was introduced by On2 in 2008. It is the successor of the VP7. According to test reports, VP8 is said to have much better characteristics than H.264 compression at low bit rates and also outperforms all other coding algorithms in coding efficiency.
