content centric networking (IoE) (CCN)

The Internet of Everything( IoE) carries an infinite variety of unstructured data. As all everyday objects - smart wearables, radio tags, e-health data, data from smart homes and smart grids, data for traffic and vehicle control, from smart cities and sensor networks - are transmitted over the Internet, communication can no longer be realized as a point-to-point connection but via a content-centric approach. This is expressed in Content Centric Networking( CCN).

In such a content-centric approach, the content is addressed and routable. The content is defined by names and not by IP addresses. The basic exchange of content is done by exchanging requests and responses. The former are referred to as interests in the CCN architecture, the latter as content objects.

Such a content-centric approach provides more flexibility and scalability, higher security, and less data congestion. The improved flexibility is due to the fact that individual content items are identified by names rather than IP addresses, and the higher security is due to the fact that the individual content items are protected rather than the transmission link. In addition, the name-tagged and protected information is stored in distributed caches. Traffic control has fewer hops, redundant requests are avoided, and fewer resources are required.
