high definition powerline communication (HD-PLC)
Panasonic's powerline technology, High Definition Powerline Communication(HD- PLC), is one of two IEEE-recognized base technologies used in IEEE 1901 for Broadband Powerline( BPL). The other is AV2 from HomePlug. HD-PLC can coexist with AV2 on the same power line.
Panasonic's HD-PLC is used primarily in Asia and Japan, and can penetrate the European market via PLC adapters built into digital televisions. It uses Wavelet OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) and features low power consumption and highly efficient data transmission. Wavelet OFDM is a proprietary technique from Panasonic in which each OFDM subcarrier undergoes wavelet conversion. This technique reduces the sidebands of the OFDM multiplex.
HD-PLC is used for simultaneous transmission of different HDTV streams in home networks, in smart homes, for connection to the access network or in electric vehicles, where data for battery charging can be transmitted and a software update or music download can be performed at the same time. HD-PLC is promoted by the alliance of the same name, which takes care of the interoperability of 1901 devices and promotes HD-PLC as one of the most important network technologies for universal home networks.
