Epoc

EPOC is an operating system for PDAs and handheld PCs. It was developed for Psion for the PersonalDigital Assistant( PDA) of the same name and later renamed Symbian OS, after a consortium of companies consisting of Ericsson, Psion, Nokia and Motorola was responsible for the further development of the EPOC operating system.

EPOC is available as EPOC16, a 16-bit operating system, and EPOC32, a 32-bit operating system with multitasking. Starting with the classic organizer functions of a PDA such as appointment monitoring, notes, address management, calendar, etc., Epoc also supports office applications with text editing, database management, spreadsheets, etc., and for some years now also communication technologies for voice and data transfer such as e-mail, web client, fax and data transfer. In addition, Epoc has tools for programming in C++ and Java and supports wireless connectivity via Bluetooth.

Epoc versions developed under Symbian are designated Epoc Release x (ERx).
