VMware

VMware, Inc. from Palo Alto is a subsidiary of EMC and develops and sells virtualization software for PC platforms. For the virtualization of networks and mass storage, the management solutions from VMware administer and automate the operation of computers, servers and storage components. The virtual networks can be set up, configured and operated with VMware ESX. The networking features and standards of the existing networking in the data center are thus supplemented by the functionality of virtual machines.

Virtualized computer environments can be provisioned, configured and modified via a management client with the Windowsoperating system. The client can also be implemented via a web browser for remote access to the virtualized environment. With virtual networking, individual computers communicate with VMware ESX without additional hardware via virtual Ethernet adapters and switches and using the same protocols as physical switches. The virtual switches are used to connect virtual machines to each other or to an external enterprise network. The virtual switches also support VLAN implementations with components from Cisco and other network equipment vendors.

Storage resource administration

VMware vStorage manages storage resources that are aggregated into a virtual infrastructure for higher utilization. Existing storage resources can be utilized more efficiently and managed with less overhead. vStorage includes features from VWware and application programming interfaces( API) that provide an abstraction layer for addressing, managing and optimizing physical storage resources.

To manage virtualized environments with dynamic cloud computing, VMware delivers vSphere, vCentre Operation and vCloud Director management solutions. They enable "zero touch" automation, policy-based service compliance and interoperability in cloud computing. VMware vShield protects virtualized data centers and cloud infrastructures running mission-critical applications.

VWware Fusion also enables the installation of the Windows operating system in environments with Mac OS X or multiple Linux operating systems. Thus Windows and its applications can be operated on Linux computers and the AppleMacintosh, but not vice versa. Older Windows versions are also emulated in this way. Products with USB interfaces or Bluetooth that were developed only for Windows, including GPS receivers, cell phones, MP3 players or special input devices, work with WMware Fusion as peripherals of a Macintosh.
