parametric stereo (PS)

In audio compression, there are various bandwidth reduction techniques to transmit a stereo signal at the lowest possible data rate. Parametric Stereo( PS) is one such method used in various audio compressions, including aacPlus, CELP, Spatial Audio Coding( SAC) and Binaural Cue Coding( BCC).

In Parametric Stereo, a mono signal with additional information is obtained from the stereo signal during coding. The mono signal is formed from the sum of the two audio channels for the left and right channels, and the additional information contains details about the phase position of the two channels, the volume difference and other spatial sound information.

How Parametric Stereo (PS) works

The decoder needs this additional information so that it can reconstruct the original signal as well as possible from the sum signal and the additional information. The additional information, which has a small amount of data, is embedded in the data stream. The total data stream of a parametric stereo signal including the additional information is between 20 kbit/s and 40 kbit/s, depending on the stereo quality.

Lossy Parametric Stereo is used only at low bit rates and provides acceptable stereo quality.
