radio access network application part (UMTS) (RANAP)

In the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network( UTRAN), signaling between UTRAN and the core network takes place via the Iu interface with Radio Access Network Application Part (RANAP).

RANAP includes the control procedures and control information for radio network control( RNC) and can also influence the functions of the Mobile Switching Center( MSC) or the Serving GPRS Support Node( SGSN), both components of the core network. RANAP knows different procedure classes, which differ in their response behavior.
